Inpatient Handbook - Newborn

  1. Complete Epic Modules sent via email from Kari Finfrock/GME Director

    1. Although the modules are not technically due until months later, they must be completed in order to have access to Epic (which you will be needing on your first day) 

    2. Attend orientation in the AM, the GME team will then walk you over to the FM lounge and introduce you to the FM newborn team

  2. It will take ~a day to have access to Epic after you’ve attended the orientation class. If it still doesn’t work, call St. Agnes IT to override and manually grant you access to Epic

  3. Setting up Epic

    1. Department: SAFWH SACN PRC FM NORTHWEST

    2. Under Available Lists > St. Agnes Medical Center Fresno > Units add to “My Group/Team Patients” the following:

      1. SAFR 6 Main Nursery

      2. SAFR FM Newborn Provider Team

      3. SAFR FM Teaching Provider Team

    3. Add LD Grease Board to top toolbar

      1. This is where you will keep track of newborns who will be assigned to pediatrics/FM

    4. Once a newborn pt is assigned to your attending, fill out the sheet below using mom’s prenatal record. Paper copies will be found near the attendings’ door (hanging on the wall).

  4. Documenting H&P, PN, DC

    1. Add template documents to your SmartText. The shorthands are:

      1. NBDCFAM

      2. NBHPFAM

      3. NBPNFAM

  5. 1 resident = 10 patients cap

  6. Workflow

    1. Sign in begins at 7AM 

    2. For a new baby, follow the steps above. For follow up babies, update handoff with:

      1. Vitals 

      2. New weight changes

      3. Screening tests

      4. Input/Output

      5. New labs

      6. Any significant events that occurred overnight

    3. Pre-round with resident(s). 

      1. If it’s the first exam, perform a full physical

        1. Familiarize yourself with the two articles attached in the drive, thoroughly

      2. If it’s a follow up exam, note of any clinical exam changes and monitor for new presentations

    4. Present to attending

    5. Round with attending

    6. Document H&P/PG/DC
